Significance of the Research
While U.S. research has examined the impact of specific military life stressors on military adolescents, little of it has compared military with civilian adolescents; previous research has also failed to compare the two populations on a range of health and social indicators. This project is rectifying these deficiencies, and is beginning the process of helping Canadian schools to acquire the information they need to more effectively serve and support military adolescents and their families, especially in the present context of CF deployments to Afghanistan.
Research Agenda
October 2008: |
40-minute survey of all Grades 9 through 12 students at a econdary school near a large Canadian army base. Most measures in the survey were taken from the National Longitudinal Survey of Children and Youth. |
Winter 2009: |
Analysis of the survey data. |
Fall / Winter 2009 - 2010: |
1.5 - 2 hour confidential interviews with 61 of the students from CF families |
Winter / Spring 2010: |
Analysis of the interview data. |
March 24 and 25, 2011: |
A two-day symposium for all research team members and school representatives to discuss findings and policy recommendations and consider strategies for implementation. |
